Results of first qualifying at Phillip Island saw Carlos Checa (Ducati Althea Racing) stake his claim as #1 favorite for the Superbike wins in the opening round on Sunday. The Spaniard stopped the clocks with a time of 1 minute 31.577 seconds, a tenth quicker than his free practice time of the morning, but slower than his best from recent testing - simply because the warmer track surface delivered less outright grip. Another man on the move was Sylvain Guintoli (Ducati Effenbert - Liberty Racing), the Frenchman doing exceptionally well to come within three-tenths of Checa, despite suffering a fall in the morning session.

Carlos Checa: “Basically, we worked with the tires this afternoon, just to make choices for race day. I felt good today but I think the grip was just a little bit less from the racetrack. We used the ‘big’ rear tire and had similar results to the previous ones, so if we do that I prefer to continue with the existing tires for now. Tomorrow we will just work towards raceday again, do a comparison with the tires and then do some longer runs on the tire we expect to use for the race.”

An impressive sub-1m32s lap time was set by Eugene Laverty (Yamaha World Superbike Team) and the WSBK rookie had the satisfaction of finishing one place ahead of 2010 world champion Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia). Guintoli’s teammate Jakub Smrz posted fifth best time, and Leon Haslam overcame some early set-up issues to go sixth. He was the top BMW Motorrad Motorsport rider today, as Troy Corser went 11th.

Michel Fabrizio (Suzuki Alstare) had a harmless crash towards the end and finished seventh, one place up on impressive new WSBK talent, Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki Racing Team). Lascorz, a top runner in WSS until his promotion to Superbike this year, was only just over half a second from Checa. Castrol Honda rider Jonathan Rea, who is still battered and bruised from his big testing get offs, was ninth fastest, placing all the competing manufacturers in WSBK this season in the top nine places in the first qualifying session.

Yoshimura Suzuki rider Josh Waters, a wild card at this event, was an impressive tenth on the exquisitely prepared GSX-R machine, leading his fellow countryman Corser, while Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike Team) was 12th, and one of many top names who ended up in the gravel at one point or other today.

Tom Sykes, Noriyuki Haga, James Toseland and Leon Camier rounded out the top 16.

Police operation targeting hoon riders in Lygon St Melbourne after a motorcyclist was nabbed at 80 km/h over the limit.

 

Police from the Melbourne Highway Patrol will crackdown on the busy Carlton predict and surrounding streets tonight as part of Operation Traction.

Uniform and plain clothed police will target motorcyclists who drink-drive, speed and fail to give way.

 

 

Snr-Sgt Simon Stevens said police were appalled increasing number of reports about motorcyclists riding on footpaths and doing unsafe manoeuvres in Lygon St.

"Some motorcyclists continue to put themselves and other road users at risk," Sen-Sgt Stevens said.

"We are extremely concerned about the reckless behaviour displayed by some motorcyclists and want to stress that one small error of judgment could very easily turn to tragedy."

 

Riding a motorbike while unlicensed attracts a $551 fine.

 

 

 

Owning or riding an unregistered motorbike attracts a penalty of up to $440.

There were more than 240 motorcycle crashes in the Melbourne police area last year.

The smashes included 46 serious injury collisions and one fatal accident.

In Yarra, which includes the inner suburbs of Richmond and Collingwood, there were almost 80 collisions.

Sen-Sgt Stevens said Operation Traction was about improving motorcyclist awareness and adherence to the road rules.

"Motorcyclists have one of the highest levels of vulnerability to sustaining injuries on the road, making it extremely important for their own safety to obey the road rules," he said.

 

"Riders need to make sure they wear appropriate motorcycle clothing, avoiding lane splitting, and keep an eye out for other vehicles on the road."

Police nabbed 117 drivers and motorcyclist during a two-night Operation Traction blitz last month.

Among those caught was a 24-year-old man with a Learners permit with a pillion passenger on board.

Both were only wearing shorts and t-shorts as motorcycle apparel.

Police allege the rider’s Learners permit had expired and his bike was unroadworthy.

Police caught 177 offenders during Operation Traction in 2010.

Bryce Van Hoof from Hoofy Racing will be wearing RS Taichi this year while racing a Kawasaki ZX6 for the 2011 racing season. Bryce completed most rounds of the Superstock championship last year, but this year moves up to the Supersport series.

Bryce's goals for this year is to complete all rounds of the ASBK season, along with competing in some rounds of the Victorian Titles and possible some Formula Extreme rounds. Although competition will be more intense this season, we believe Bryce will be competitive just the same. With great support behind him, we believe 2011 will be a successful year for him.

Confirmed for this year, Speed TV will be covering all the rounds live. This makes the series more public, and giving some sponsors some added publicity. It is with deepest sympathy that we wish to advise all members of Hartwell Motorcycle Club that we lost a true gentleman in Phil Harrison #3 at the recent event at Winton on Saturday 5th February 2011.  Phil was a great competitor who was recently regraded to Non-Expert after finishing 4th in the Thunderbikes Club Championship in 2010.  The Hartwell Committee and it's Member's would like to pass on our condolences to Phil's family and friends in this time of loss.
