Stoner pipped Spies at the line for a half-a-wheel margin of victory.
Hayden, Rossi and De Puniet were all taken out on the first lap when Bautista lost the front and crashed, taking Rossi out and starting a chain reaction crash which saw Hayden later in the garage icing his right wrist. Rossi walked away from the crash. Stoner won the first and last ever 800cc Motogp race era.
