The Marco Simoncelli Foundation

Marco_simoncelli

"The Marco Simoncelli Foundation" began as an idea of Carlo Pernat (Simoncelli’s manager) and was immediately embraced by the Simoncelli family, who worked quickly to make the foundation a legal reality.

"We completed all of the paperwork in a very short time," said Paolo Simoncelli, "and we are ready to start work." The president of the foundation will be Marco’s mother Rossella, while Paolo Simoncelli’s sister Angela and Dr. Arnaldo Cappellini will sit on the board of directors. Sister Martina and girlfriend Kate, with assistance from Carlo Pernat and Paolo Beltramo (Mediaset MotoGP journalist and friend) will offer their assistance.

"We already have several initiatives underway. For example, on January 20 an event titled 'Happy Birthday Sic' will be held at the 105 Stadium in Rimini, an evening designed for fun as my son would have liked. There will be comedians from the TV show Zelig on stage and many of Simoncelli’s friends from the GP paddock are also expected to show up. We are also working on an exhibition dedicated to Marco in the City of Coriano, managed directly by the Foundation. We are just getting started and we're surrounded by positivity that was so typical of Marco, positivity that affected everyone around him and made him an extraordinary person."

"The basic premise of the Foundation," explained Paolo Simoncelli, "is that through keeping the memory of Marco alive we can help alleviate suffering of those who are worse off than us. It is hard for me to say where and how the funds raised will be distributed, since I cannot assess how much we will have available as time goes by. One thing is certain; I will try and manage all this as a good father."

"We received a huge number of messages of affection for Marco" added Paolo Simoncelli, "and this has helped and continues to help us overcome the difficult times that we live with daily. Seeing how many people loved our son has helped us go on and we believe that ‘The Marco Simoncelli Foundation’ represents the best way to remember him in the future."

Kevlar Jeans - Motorcycle Jeans

Main_bio

IN RECENT years there’s been an explosion in the number of makes and models of riding jeans - denim with protection. Conventional jeans basically tear to shreds in a crash, so some smart people have incorporated a variety of technology - most commonly Kevlar – into jeans to provide stylish riding gear which offers an alternative to standard denim far better suited to motorcycling.
Although there are leather and textile riding pants, most riders most of the time choose to ride in jeans, because they are comfortable, fashionable and practical off the bike. But conventional jeans certainly aren’t practical DURING an off… but most of us thought they were. So now we have a number of manufacturers offering jeans with most, if not all, of the features of conventional jeans with the benefit of much better crash protection.
Most do this with Kevlar, a product developed by DuPont, the massive American chemical company.
Kevlar comes in many forms, but the type used in jeans is a fibre, massively stronger than the cotton used in jeans, and also much stronger and more heat resistant than nylon or polyester thread.
Importantly for the sliding motorcyclist, Kevlar does not melt and its impact tolerance is high.
Cordura is another product used because of its high strength, abrasion resistance and protective qualities.

BMW
BMW has chosen to go with cotton and Cordura, with removable knee protectors, for its City 2 Denim Trousers. They are lightweight, gradually fade just like jeans from their slightly washed-out look when new, are supplied with a belt and come in sizes XS-XXXL. At BMW dealers only.

Draggin Jeans
Easily the best know manufacturer of motorcycle jeans, Draggin makes a full range to suit ladies, men and even youths and children.
Their latest product is the C-EVO Jeans, which feature full European CE approval, the first motorcycle jeans to achieve this standard. With its full Kevlar and Dyneema lining, additional lining for comfort, pockets for armour, ankle straps to keep pants in place and colour fast technology to keep them looking new longer, Draggin describe C-EVO as the ‘Next Generation’ of Kevlar jeans. Dyneema is billed as 'The World's Strongest Fibre', and is an integral part of every pair of Draggin Jeans, along with Kevlar.
Draggin’s range of motorcyclists’ jeans is unparalleled and is available from many bike shops around Australia.

Hornee Jeans
Hornee builds men’s and women’s riding jeans in a variety of styles. Featuring the Hornee Safety Cell, all Hornee’s products have extra Kevlar to provide increased safety. Features include military grade Kevlar which is ultra-thin for comfort, heavy duty double stitching and double layers in the hip, knee and thigh regions.

NEDS
Neds Motorcycle Wear produce a variety of ladies’ and men’s Kevlar jeans. The Iconic is stretch Bootleg, the Ironhorse is classic fit, the Kelly are cargo pants and there’s also the Revolver and the Saga, a specific women’s jean.

Sartso
With military-grade high burst strength DuPont Kevlar and optional CE-Approved knee armour, Sartso Jeans offer excellent protection. Designed with a fashion edge, Sartso jeans look and fit great for both men and women. There's a full range of styles including classic cut, relax fit, cargo pants and even a mid-rise hipster for the girls available from Sartso.

Spyke
A European-based manufacturer of motorcycle gear including race suits and wet weather gear, Spyke also produce denim and Cordura riding jeans. Available in men’s and ladies’ sizes.

TKD Jeans
TKD Jeans have a unique feature: you can zip out the full-length Kevlar lining when it’s not required. There’s a variety of sizes and styles available.

Teknic
A manufacturer of leathers, textile and denim based riding gear, Teknic offers the Violator Kevlar jeans for men and the Warrior Kevlar Jeans for women. With features such as Knox armour, stretch panels and cowhide trim, the Teknic jeans offer more than just style and protection.

Michele Pirro wants to make a statement in MOTOGP

Michele_pirro

Michele Pirro shared his expectations and goals ahead of his upcoming season aboard the Gresini team’s CRT. "It's definitely an important milestone," began the 25 year-old. "I’ll be joining the best riders in the world in the highest category of racing on board a great team.”

Pirro recently extended his partnership with the Italian team, about which he said: “I am happy I’m staying with them, they are like family and after everything that happened at the end of the season, I really wanted to stay. My first place at Valencia gave Fausto (Gresini) and the team the strength to take the next step they needed to continue. After what happened in Sepang, the motivation to continue racing was at risk, but that victory helped us want to try to build something positive.”

After a competitive season in the Moto2 Championship, the Italian is ready to make the lead into the premier class where he will confront the challenge of the new CRT category, which will commence in 2012. “People are saying that it is the future,” said Pirro. "Of course in the beginning it will be criticized, just like the Moto2 class was. But after the first year, it should be possible to develop the performance of the CRT bikes even further.”

Following his win at the final round in Valencia, most expected that he would run a second term in the 600cc Moto2 class. But the two-time 1000cc Italian Superstock champion surprised everyone by opting instead for the jump to MotoGP. "I admit I waited until the last second to decide whether to continue with Moto2, especially after learning about the circuits and the category in general. With a few improvements to the bike, most likely we could have had a successful season. But I spoke with Fausto several times and he has always had the utmost confidence in me and encouraged me, and has never stopped believing in my abilities, so I'm really happy and proud to represent the Gresini team in MotoGP.”

“Staying in Moto2 surely would have allowed me to develop further in the class as a rider, and taking on this new opportunity will be a lot of hard work. But I'm happy, we will work hard to do our best to have a good season, although, given the newness of the class it’s difficult to predict too much. I am prepared and excited to invest in this new project."

The San Carlo Honda Gresini Team will run a prototype Italian FTR chassis with a Honda CBR 1000 engine, which he went on to describe: "The bike is promising, FTR has always made good chassis and of course the Honda engine and will strong. Although Aprilia and BMW are further ahead in development, I will still try to focus and prepare myself to start from where we are to move the project forward. Hopefully we can adapt the chassis to the tires, but for my part I will have to learn everything about the bike, from the electronics to the best suitable riding position. But most important will be the first test, which is expected to be in February.”

Pirro isn’t new to 1000cc bikes, having won the Italian 1000cc Superstock Championship in 2007 and 2008, riding a Yamaha YZF-R1 for the Yamaha Lorenzini by Leoni team. The next season he won the Italian Supersport Championship, and in 2010 rode as a replacement for the injured Vladimir Ivanov of the Gresini Racing Moto2 team, with which he remained for the next season as a regular rider.

The Italian’s career path saw him jump to the highest category in just a few years’ time. “For every rider, the ultimate goal is to race in MotoGP, but I’ll admit that this step in my plans was expected to happen in a couple of years. The important thing now is to work well with the team and have fun at the same time, because when everything goes your way and you can ride without problems, the results gradually come. In a few years I’ve done what many of my colleagues take much longer to achieve, but I believe I've earned each step along the way to the higher categories."

"I don’t want to just 'participate' in the MotoGP class, I’d also like make a statement. Even if the level is high, and I’m racing with the best riders in the world, I want to try to be competitive with them. I realize that in the beginning this won’t be easy, it will be difficult to achieve much because of the different technical circumstances, but hopefully the first year with CRT is an investment for the future, to grow and be competitive in the coming seasons.”

MotoGP Rules and Regulations for 2012

Caseystonersepangtest

The Grand Prix Commission, composed of Messrs. Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna, Chairman), Ignacio Verneda (FIM Executive Director, Sport), Herve Poncharal (IRTA) and Takanao Tsubouchi (MSMA) in the presence of Javier Alonso (Dorna), Mike Trimby (IRTA) and Paul Butler (Secretary of the meeting), in a meeting held on 14 December in Madrid, decided the following:

Sporting Regulations

A revised wording of the testing regulation was approved. This incorporated the various decisions made earlier in 2011 concerning this matter.

Additionally it was decided that contracted riders in the MotoGP class may also test machines using the allocation of 240 tyres available to each manufacturer's team. Previously such testing was restricted to test riders only. In the interest of fair competition it was also agreed that other MotoGP class riders could exclusively test their team machines with a limit of 120 tyres per rider.

It was agreed that riders who did not qualify for the race based on their time in the qualifying practice can qualify if they achieve a time at least equal to 107% of the fastest rider in the warm up. This is an addition to the previous regulation which only considered free practice sessions.

Under the regulation concerning MotoGP class riders starting the race from pit lane due to an engine durability sanction, it was agreed that in future they will start ten seconds after the green light is shown at the pit lane exit.

Riders in all classes may now use a starter engine on the grid. For all classes tyre warmers may now remain in place until the display of the one minute board. Generators must still be removed at the three minute board.

Technical Regulations

With effect from 2012, for all classes, it will be compulsory to display a red rear light in rain conditions.

The minimum weight limits for 1000cc machines in the MotoGP class will be increased from the current 153 kilos.
- Effective from 2012: 157 kilos
- Effective from 2013: 160 kilos

The permitted wheel sizes for the Moto3 class were confirmed as:
Front 2.50" x 17" only
Rear 3.50" x 17" only

Several detail changes to regulations, submitted by the Technical Director were all approved.

A list of MotoGP class entries for 2012 was considered by the Commission. The list contained nine entries plus one reserve entry using CRT machinery of various types. Participation of all CRT entries was approved by the Commission on the understanding that the granting of CRT Status was subject to review by the Grand Prix Commission at any time.

KTM debuts at Moto3 Valencia test

Hector_faubel_002_preview_169

Héctor Faubel (Aspar Team) took to the controls of the KTM engine powered Kalex for the first time on Wednesday, the bike will ride next year in the new Moto3 category. The Valencian rider was only able to complete about 10 laps on the first of the two-day private Moto3 test that began yesterday in Valencia.

The first day of testing at the Valencia circuit was filled with more activity in the team pit boxes than on the track itself, as both the Aspar Team and the RW Racing GP Team needed several hours to assemble the machines that arrived directly from the factory. Neither Alberto Moncayo, who signed with the Aspar Team on Tuesday, nor Luis Salom of the RW Racing GP Team made it onto the pavement, though KTM test rider Joan Olivé was able to join Faubel on track.

Following his first contact with the Kalex-KTM, Faubel said: "The first impression is that the bike goes quite well, it moves pretty good for a new bike and the engine is very different, it’s flatter and the power band is lower than the two-strokes. Now we have a lot of work to do because this bike is like a baby and needs to evolve."

"I made a few laps, maybe ten, because they had to assemble and prepare the bike first, but I know the four-strokes and everything felt fine. It’s early to say anything more about the bike," continued Faubel. "Tomorrow I expect we will work on the carburetion and fuel injection, which is different from the two-strokes, and we will work a bit with the chassis, since we put the bike on the track as it came from the factory."

Roberto Rolfo returns to Moto2

Roberto_rolfo_001_slideshow_169

An official agreement between the Technomag-CIP team and Roberto Rolfo was signed on Tuesday, contracting the two to spend the next season together. The Italian teams up with Dominique Aegerter in his return to the Moto2 class after spending a year in World Superbike.

The team will again be fielding a Suter as they have in the past two seasons, which Rolfo helped the chassis builder develop in 2009. The experienced rider also won the Sepang GP and took a podium at Sachsenring aboard the Suter in 2010 when he was riding for the Italtrans Racing Team.

The rider from Turin is pleased to return to the World Championship with this new project:

"In 2010 we disputed the final race in Valencia Moto2 and then…things were left unfinished," said Rolfo, referring to his partnership with the Italian team that was not carried over into the 2011 season. "But you can’t leave things halfway; you fight to carry them out. And so I’m returning to Moto2 in 2012 with Technomag-CIP, a team led by Alain Bronec. I’m very happy because the team operates at a high level and has shown great professionalism over the years, working with very fast riders."

"I'm happy to be back riding a 600. It’s a motorcycle that I love and I really enjoy the high corner speeds with the bike!" continued the 31-year-old, who is currently recovering from a leg injury. "I'm getting better, my knee rehabilitation has been going well and I’m looking forward to getting back on a bike. In early December, the team will meet to plan the winter work program and work on getting set for the first race of a season that is very important to me."

Marc Márquez out of Jerez test

Marc_marquez

Marc Márquez will not take part in the Moto2 tests to be held in Jerez Circuit from Wednesday to Friday. After the last medical checks —made last Thursday in Barcelona by Dr. Jordi Arruga, neuro-ophtalmologist of the Instituto Catalán de la Retina—, the decision was taken for Márquez not to join the tests, as he is not yet fully recovered from the sight problem he suffers since his crash in the first free practice of the Malaysian Grand Prix last October 21st.

Following an evaluation of Alpinestars Repsol rider’s ocular damage, Dr. Arruga confirmed that despite having greatly improved, Márquez will not be fully recover to take part in the next three days of tests.

Emilio Alzamora, knowing that the injury needs a recovery time, commented that “We cannot estimate how much time Marc will need to be completely recovered, although the healing of the injury has been positive, as Dr. Arruga informed us. So right now we need to be patient”.

2012 KTM 1190 RC8R Specifications - Preview

2012-ktm-rc8r-superbike

KTM's superbike continued progressing to new levels, the Austrian machine gaining worldwide status after taking the 2011 German Superbike Championship.

And for 2012, KTM further revised its signature 175-horsepower superbike, the RC8 R receiving some updates to the engine, transmission, suspension and electronics. The bike is also still offered in the RC8 R Race Spec, a full-on race machine.

Starting with the 1195cc 75-degree V-Twin, KTM added 100 grams of weight to the forged crankshaft for more inertia, allowing for better mass distribution and smoother running. KTM further enhanced the engine's inertia by 25 percent through beefing up the flywheel a kilogram.

KTM also revised the camshaft timing on the two overhead camshafts, updating them to the same aggressive profile (former 8.5 to 6.5 degrees) offered in KTM's updated Club Race specs (the Club Race kit basically allows a rider to turn the KTM RC8 R into a race machine).

The four-valve RC8R continues to feature the twin-plug ignition that "fires the two differently sized spark plugs in each cylinder head independently of each other in such a way that more efficient combustion and a smoother, optimally controlled combustion sequence are achieved at all times. The result: even more controllable power, lower fuel consumption and less emissions."

Feeding the 2012 KTM RC8 R is a Keihin fuel-injection system that features twin throttle valves and a 52mm throttle body that has a ISC (idle speed control) cam to allow smoother airflow in the initial range of movement. KTM also enhanced the 2012's V2 with revised fuel maps based on Club Race specs.

The RC8R's six-speed transmission was also updated. KTM first added a sensor that allows the ECU to help control engine braking depending on the current gear, killing the need for a slipper clutch. KTM also redesigned the RC8 R's shift drum to reduce weight and provide better shifting, and also added stiffer aluminum gear shifter linkage for more precise shifts and easier adjustability.

Further sticking to its "Ready to Race" adage, the RC8 R features revised suspension settings and updates to the fork and shock. The front WP 43mm fork now has air chambers, up 110mm from 80mm, and the WP rear monoshock has a reduced rear-spring rate from 542 to 485 lbs. per square inch. KTM says this "provides an improved setting for track usage and improves daily riding comfort."

The rear linkage eccentric has also been revamped with a larger range of adjustment - 12mm.

Stopping the RC8 R are Brembo Monoblock four-piston, radially-mounted calipers squeezing two 320mm discs up front, and a two-piston fixed caliper squeezing a single 220mm disc out back. The KTM superbike rolls on a 17-inch rims, with a 3.5-inch wide front, and a 6-inch wide rear; the bike arrives stock with 120/70 ZR 17 (front) and 190/55 ZR 17 (rear) rubber.

As for other new highlights, KTM says the RC8 R features a gear indicator in both Street and Race mode - shown in two places: as a line under the RPM and as a numeric display. The superbike also has instant and average fuel economy updated every 3 seconds.

KTM is offering the 2012 RC8 R in either a white or black color scheme, with LED lights surrounding the headlights.

Price is yet to be confirmed.

Nicky Hayden Wrist Surgery

The Ducati Team rider had an operation on Monday to insert a screw in the scaphoid in his right wrist, which he fractured in a crash at the Valencia GP.

Ducati Team rider Nicky Hayden underwent surgery on Monday 14th November to speed up the healing process on his right wrist, which was injured in a crash at the November 7th Valencia Grand Prix.

During the operation, which was carried out at the Fremont Sports Therapy and Surgery Centre in Fremont, California, USA, Dr. Arthur Ting placed a small screw in Hayden’s fractured scaphoid. The radial styloid, which is also fractured, was not treated.

“Everything went pretty smoothly,” Hayden said shortly after the operation. “The scaphoid is a slow-healing bone, so you don’t want to wait, only to find out in January that it’s not healing correctly. I’m happy to get it fixed right so that I’ll be ready to go when I need to be.”

After wearing a brace and using a bone stimulator for four weeks, Hayden will have his wrist X-rayed again to assess its status. He is confident of being at full fitness before his return to the track for the first day of the 2012 testing season on January 31st in Sepang, Malaysia.

Max Biaggi interview at EICMA - 2012 Season

Max_biaggi_eicma_interview1

The presence of the SBK Paddock Show at EICMA was a great opportunity for the public to get up close with many of the top WSB riders. One of the biggest draws was clearly the 2010 world champion, Max Biaggi. The ‘Roman Emperor' arrived on Saturday afternoon for the ritual photograph and autograph sessions, after which WorldSBK.com interviewed him backstage about the past year and the prospects for the 2012 season.

You're here at EICMA once again, this time at the World Superbike stand. What do you think of the show?

"EICMA is the biggest and best bike show in Europe. Every year there are always a lot of new bikes and it's just great to be here. I'm sure this negative period for the bike market will come to an end and things will start to improve again in the motorcycle industry."

The 2011 season wasn't particularly easy. You were injured at the Nürburgring, then you came back at Portimão with two strong races despite only starting in 17th slot. Are you glad you can get back on the bike again at the end of the month at the Algarve circuit?

"I finished third overall, with a bit of bad luck and after missing three rounds. For sure I wanted to do better but luck wasn't in my zodiac sign this year. But I'm back in shape, that's the important thing, I don't need to recover any more because I'm already at 100%. Now I can start to work on myself and see where I can improve, and hope that the bike will make further progress so I can get a good start next year in Australia. I aim to get the number 1 plate back again but we'll have to see what the other riders think about that. We'll only have an idea of the 2012 season once the first race gets underway."

Let's move on to Eugene Laverty. Another rider from over the Channel, as in the last two seasons but someone who scored some good results in his first season. Do you think that competition within the same team can help in giving you further motivation?

"My team is already tried and tested and Biaggi and his staff are all ready to go. Laverty will have a team all for himself who will as a result work for him alone. The only positive thing I can see is that it will be a good stimulus for me should I find myself in difficulty, in that case it'll motivate me even more to try and stay ahead."
