Formula Extreme 500km $100000 Prize Money

276836_381781841891551_1533979880_n

Endurance motorcycle racing is set to make a comeback in Australia with a big bang, with a Superbike race announced for next year with the richest prize in Australian motorsport to go to the winner.

The inaugural FX-Superbike 500 will take place at Sydney Motorsport Park on November 16 next year with the bikes set to race from day into night.

The winners of the event will get a cool $100 thousand for their troubles.

Australian Road & Track Rider Promotions, the group that operates the AFX-SBK Championship Sprint Series, are behind the event.

Managing director Terry O'Neill saying the event will give local two-wheel fans their own big race for the first time in decades.

"Australian motorcycle racing has a very proud history of having its own big name icon motorcycle race meetings like the Bathurst Bike Races that were run Easter weekends for many decades," O'Neill said. "Unfortunately race fans have been without their own icon race meeting for a generation.

"We believe this 500 kilometre, $100 thousand winner-takes-all endurance race for FX-Superbikes will once again give Australian race fans and competitors alike something positive and excitign to look forward to on the domestic race calendar, and it will fast become an icon event."

The event will be open to just 50 entries with two riders per bike, and will feature a Le Mans-style start in mid-afternoon with the race set to finish under the glow of headlights.

For locally-based riders to be eligible to enter, they will have to compete in at least three rounds of the Australian FX-Superbike Championship Sprint Series, while the race is open to Aussie currently competing overseas or other international riders.

Technical regulations will be released over coming weeks, with organisers saying their aim is to keep the race as affordable as possible.

One detail has been revealed, with all bikes to compete on homologated DOT-approved treaded road tyres.

Dani Pedrosa making 100th Motogp start at Jerez

Dani_pedrosa

Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa will be making his 100th MotoGP start in front of his home Spanish fans at Jerez on Sunday.

Pedrosa arrives for round two of the 2012 season on top form, having finished a close second to Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo in the opening Qatar night race.

Pedrosa was a close third behind team-mate Casey Stoner and Lorenzo during March's Jerez pre-season test and has finished on the Jerez podium every year since joining MotoGP in 2006, including victory in the 2008 event.

“The pre-season test at Jerez was positive for us, we had good feelings on the bike and finished happy, so I'm really looking forward to going there for the Grand Prix this weekend,” said Pedrosa.

“We need to be very focused and have a good qualifying session in order to start the race in a good position. I love the Jerez circuit and the passionate support of the Spanish fans, I hope the grandstands are full again as it adds to the unique atmosphere there.

“We had a great race in Qatar and to start the season on the podium is important, but we cannot relax, we will be aiming for another strong race this weekend".

Pedrosa's 15 MotoGP race wins make him the most successful rider yet to win the title.

Joan Lascorz is still being evaluated by doctors

Joan_lascorz

Kawasaki Provec Racing's Joan Lascorz is still being evaluated by doctors regarding his chances of 'gaining mobility' following a serious accident at Imola.

Lascorz remains in the Intensive Care unit at the Vall d'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona after falling during the official World Superbike test at the Italian circuit following the second round of the championship on April 2.

The Spaniard suffered damage to the C6 vertebra and underwent a 'lengthy and delicate' operation to reposition his spine at Bologna's Maggiore Hospital before being transferred to hospital in Spain.

The has been much speculation since the accident over his condition, but an article on the official World Superbike website appears to be the first formal admission that the Kawasaki rider could be paralysed as a result of his injuries.

The article states: 'With doctors still evaluating the situation regarding the possibility of Lascorz recovering his mobility, a press release was issued by the Provec Racing team yesterday [Wednesday] saying that vital support systems would be removed today [Thursday] to allow the Spanish rider to breathe autonomously.'

On Wednesday, a statement released by Kawasaki Provec Racing said the full extent of Lascorz's injuries could not be assessed until he is woken from an induced coma.

“Until the doctors wake Joan and the neurologists are able to gather the relevant evidence, the exact extent of the injury and his chances of recovery cannot be established,” said the statement.

MotoGP: Rossi cannot make the difference with Ducati

F2a12a9c-1fdb-4cc6-92ac-be323193c272mediumres

Former seven-time MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi has admitted that he cannot get to grips with his Ducati Desmosidici GP12 after a difficult start to the MotoGP season in Qatar.

The Italian finished the 22-lap race 10th after starting 12th on the starting grid while his American team mate Nicky Hayden who qualified and finished sixth. Speaking to Italian broadcaster Mediaset, Rossi said that he had big problems at the start of the race and lost a lot of time while under braking.

"I can't ride this bike, I can't make the difference," said Rossi. "I can't even keep up with Hayden's pace, who I used to go quick against in comparison. In theory, with new tyres I should go quicker. Nicky managed to do a good race with the other works Ducati, but he still ended up only sixth."

Rossi had been slightly optimistic following the pre-season tests at Sepang, but had still ruled out being competitive enough to challenge for the MotoGP crown that he had held from 2001 to 2005, and won again in 2008 and 2009.

Following the global economic recession, MotoGP (like F1) introduced drastic spending restrictions including limiting pre-season testing and banning in-season testing. There were just nine days of pre-season testing held prior to the start of the 2012 season and it seems to have affected Rossi more than his championship rivals Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner, who won the 2010 and 2011 titles, respectively.

Rossi has scored just one podium finish since leaving Yamaha for the Ducati team at the end of the 2010 season.

Lap records fall at Broadford - VRRC

VRRC Round 1 at Broadford sees track records fall.

-- By Steve Thibou

[[posterous-content:pid___0]]

A new look around the paddock of Victorian Road Race Championship at Round 1 at Broadford on 24th and 25th March, with the paddock resembling a smaller version of ASBK. This look is definitely a positive for the series and should attract a good crowd of spectators once the word gets out.

For some competitors the meeting started in the wet, but by mid morning the track had changed to dry, it remained that way for the whole weekend.

The almost perfect conditions enabled Pro-Stock track record holder Ben Nicolson to dominate the Superbike/Pro-Stock races, winning all three races by at least four-seconds over Brett Simmonds. Race two saw Nicolson break his own track record with a time of 57.707. Nicolson leads both Superbike and Pro-Stock championships.

Ryan Taylor was all on his own in the Supersport races with lap time’s two-seconds quicker than his nearest competitor. The last Supersport race for the weekend saw Taylor break his previous track record at Broadford with a time of 58.235. Taylor leads the championship with 75pts ahead of Blair 66pts, and Fyffe 56pts.

Superstock 600 was unlucky for Phil Czaj who started from the rear of the grid after high-siding in first qualifying, followed by mechanical problems in the final qualifier. Czaj worked his way forward in all races and posted the fastest lap time in Race two and three. However, it was James Patrick in great form who took out all three races and now leads the Superstock championship by 13pts over Phil Czaj and Ben Blyth, both on 60pts.

Race three of Superstock 600 saw an incident on the cool down lap. Ricky Suckling’s Yamaha R6 caught on fire, Ricky was forced to stop the bike and marshals rushed to put out the flames.

Supermoto was conducted on bitumen and dirt for this round at Broadford. A track layout that suited Ben Nicolson on the No.5 Kawasaki KXF450 saw him take out all three races by an impressive margin. Ben, who also races Superbike/Prostock, manages to make the transition between bikes with ease.

One of the biggest Junior turnouts in some time saw Lawson Walters win the first three races on the RMU GP7 80. A DNF in the final 12-lap feature race saw Walters slip down the rankings for third overall in the points.

There was a battle all weekend in the Pre-Modern class between Ryan Talyor and Craig Domaschenz riding a Ducati 996. Domaschenz won two of the three races to win his class.

With a group of six sidecars contesting the VRRC it was the pair of Neville and Glen Hazelman that won all three races. In race one swinger Laura Thomson departed the sidecar and was uninjured.

Feature race of the round was the Over 500cc bikes. After 14 laps the event was won by Brett Simmonds over Kris Parnell and Ben Hook.

VRRC also hosted the second round of ASBK 250 production class with five races contested over the weekend. Three riders managed to swap the top spot on the podium over the weekend. Is was previous Phillip Island round winner Luke Burgess (QLD) on 113pts that took out the round from Zac Levy on 104pts, followed by Olly Simpson on 99pts. Burgess leads the championship by 16pts after two rounds.

It was the first look at Moto3 bikes in the opening round of ASBK Superlights Championship, also incorporated into this round of the VRRC. Lincoln Gliding (QLD) on the Honda NSR250 won two out of three races and the first round with 68pts, followed by Pitt on 60pts and Zanesco 60pts.

The next round of Victorian Road Race Championships is at Broadford on 7th-8th July, 2012.
