Motogp: Cave to pressure and drop rookie rule for 2013
Yes it's true, Motogp has dropped the rookie rule after Casey Stoner announcement of retiring.
As reported by the Spanish daily El Pais, Dorna and IRTA have decided that this rule that currently prevents rookies signing up with factory racing teams needed to be scrapped as there is currently not enough satelitte teams to support it.
When this rule was introduced in 2010, at that point there had been enough teams to make this a viable rule. At that point there was 3 satellite ducati seat, 2 yamaha seats and 4 honda seat available.
But probably the main reason for the rule to be changed again was because Honda wanted to sign up Marc Marquez for next season after Casey Stoners retirement. Along with this, the satellite teams themselves have there own sponsor which created more problems. Both satellite honda teams have backing from 2 seperate oil companies, which are not the same sponsor as Marc Marquez currently has, which is of course Repsol.
So for now it looks like Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa will head up the Repsol Honda team for 2013.

Casey Stoner surprised with Jerez Motogp victory
By Stephen English
Having qualified fifth, MotoGP champion Casey Stoner was downcast about his prospects of claiming his first Spanish Grand Prix win, the Australian commenting on Saturday that, “The Spanish riders just seem to find something extra here at Jerez.”
With Jorge Lorenzo on pole position and countryman Dani Pedrosa alongside him on the front row, it seemed that Stoner would have a hard day's work to get to the front of the field during the 27 lap race.
A slow start did not help his cause with the Repsol Honda rider Stoner getting boxed in by Ben Spies, but with damp conditions the eventual victor was simply keen to avoid any potential accidents at the opening corner.
Stoner alluded to his clash with Valentino Rossi last year by saying, “I put myself into a nice comfortable position [at the first corner] not to hit a wet patch and not to get t-boned by somebody”
The 26 year old however wasted little time moving to the front of the field and once there his thoughts changed to battling with Lorenzo and Pedrosa.
“I didn't think I could break away from Dani or Jorge,” said Stoner. “But I thought I could go away with them for the chance of a podium.”
In the closing stages of the race however Stoner was struggling with arm pump and poor grip under braking, allowing Lorenzo to close up to his rear wheel.
“The bike wasn't working great at the end of the race under brakes and we were just trying to hold on for the win.”
That's exactly what Stoner succeeded in doing, claiming his first 1000cc victory by 0.947s over Lorenzo, with Pedrosa two-seconds behind in third.

Motogp: Yamaha 1st and 2nd final practice in Qatar
Jorge Lorenzo led a Yamaha one-two during Friday night's final practice for the season-opening Qatar MotoGP at Losail.
After two practice sessions with Honda's reigning world champion Casey Stoner at the top, Lorenzo and satellite M1 rider Cal Crutchlow squeezed ahead of the Australian in the closing minutes of FP3 - but both required the aid of a soft rear tyre.
Former world champion Lorenzo finished 0.154sec ahead of Crutchlow with Stoner 0.372sec from the Spaniard.
"I am very happy with today because we improved a lot on yesterday's lap time," said Lorenzo. "I'm also happy for Cal in second, the bike seems much better than last year for us. I think we have even more potential for improvement tomorrow.
"We still have a few issues to solve, especially corner entry, but we manage to keep a good pace. I'm going to try my hardest for qualifying tomorrow and see what we can do."
"We know exactly what we have to do for tomorrow, if the track improves and we can get the corner entry better then we will be ready to race," added Factory Yamaha team manager Wilco Zeelenberg.
Lorenzo's factory team-mate Ben Spies suffered a crash and then technical problems on his way to eleventh.

Motogp HRC: 1000cc power only unleashed in 5th and 6th gears

HRC executive vice president Shuhei Nakamoto believes the biggest difference with the new 1000cc MotoGP bikes will only be felt in fifth and sixth gears.
“Even with the 800cc we had to reduce the power up to fourth gear,” he said. “So compared with the 800, with the 1000cc we have more power in fifth and sixth gear.
“Straight-line speed is a bit faster, but time gained is only in fifth and sixth gear acceleration. And because top speed is higher you must brake sooner.
“Cornering performance depends on chassis and tyres, which are not so different to 800cc, although the weight has increased. Of course, I expect the lap time to be better than the 800, but not a big difference.”
During the opening test of 2012, at Sepang, Honda's reigning world champion Casey Stoner dipped slightly under his best 800cc lap time from last year's winter tests. Further lap time improvements are expected in the second test later this month.
No official top speeds were recorded at Sepang, but the Hondas were said to be fastest through unofficial speed traps set up by some teams.
Yamaha's 2010 world champion Jorge Lorenzo has expressed concerns about the increase in top speeds with 1000cc bikes, but seven-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi thinks the risk is minimal.
“At the fast tracks the top speed will be quite impressive, but I don't think it will be more dangerous,” said the Ducati rider.
The highest official MotoGP top speed is 349.3km/h (217.1mph) by Dani Pedrosa during practice for the 2009 Italian Grand Prix at Mugello. Pedrosa was riding an 800cc RC212V.
The highest top speed of the previous 990cc bikes was 343.3km/h (213.6mph) by Honda's Makoto Tamada, during qualifying at China's Shanghai circuit in 2006.

The Marco Simoncelli Foundation

"The Marco Simoncelli Foundation" began as an idea of Carlo Pernat (Simoncelli’s manager) and was immediately embraced by the Simoncelli family, who worked quickly to make the foundation a legal reality.
"We completed all of the paperwork in a very short time," said Paolo Simoncelli, "and we are ready to start work." The president of the foundation will be Marco’s mother Rossella, while Paolo Simoncelli’s sister Angela and Dr. Arnaldo Cappellini will sit on the board of directors. Sister Martina and girlfriend Kate, with assistance from Carlo Pernat and Paolo Beltramo (Mediaset MotoGP journalist and friend) will offer their assistance.
"We already have several initiatives underway. For example, on January 20 an event titled 'Happy Birthday Sic' will be held at the 105 Stadium in Rimini, an evening designed for fun as my son would have liked. There will be comedians from the TV show Zelig on stage and many of Simoncelli’s friends from the GP paddock are also expected to show up. We are also working on an exhibition dedicated to Marco in the City of Coriano, managed directly by the Foundation. We are just getting started and we're surrounded by positivity that was so typical of Marco, positivity that affected everyone around him and made him an extraordinary person."
"The basic premise of the Foundation," explained Paolo Simoncelli, "is that through keeping the memory of Marco alive we can help alleviate suffering of those who are worse off than us. It is hard for me to say where and how the funds raised will be distributed, since I cannot assess how much we will have available as time goes by. One thing is certain; I will try and manage all this as a good father."
"We received a huge number of messages of affection for Marco" added Paolo Simoncelli, "and this has helped and continues to help us overcome the difficult times that we live with daily. Seeing how many people loved our son has helped us go on and we believe that ‘The Marco Simoncelli Foundation’ represents the best way to remember him in the future."

Michele Pirro wants to make a statement in MOTOGP

Michele Pirro shared his expectations and goals ahead of his upcoming season aboard the Gresini team’s CRT. "It's definitely an important milestone," began the 25 year-old. "I’ll be joining the best riders in the world in the highest category of racing on board a great team.”
Pirro recently extended his partnership with the Italian team, about which he said: “I am happy I’m staying with them, they are like family and after everything that happened at the end of the season, I really wanted to stay. My first place at Valencia gave Fausto (Gresini) and the team the strength to take the next step they needed to continue. After what happened in Sepang, the motivation to continue racing was at risk, but that victory helped us want to try to build something positive.”
After a competitive season in the Moto2 Championship, the Italian is ready to make the lead into the premier class where he will confront the challenge of the new CRT category, which will commence in 2012. “People are saying that it is the future,” said Pirro. "Of course in the beginning it will be criticized, just like the Moto2 class was. But after the first year, it should be possible to develop the performance of the CRT bikes even further.”
Following his win at the final round in Valencia, most expected that he would run a second term in the 600cc Moto2 class. But the two-time 1000cc Italian Superstock champion surprised everyone by opting instead for the jump to MotoGP. "I admit I waited until the last second to decide whether to continue with Moto2, especially after learning about the circuits and the category in general. With a few improvements to the bike, most likely we could have had a successful season. But I spoke with Fausto several times and he has always had the utmost confidence in me and encouraged me, and has never stopped believing in my abilities, so I'm really happy and proud to represent the Gresini team in MotoGP.”
“Staying in Moto2 surely would have allowed me to develop further in the class as a rider, and taking on this new opportunity will be a lot of hard work. But I'm happy, we will work hard to do our best to have a good season, although, given the newness of the class it’s difficult to predict too much. I am prepared and excited to invest in this new project."
The San Carlo Honda Gresini Team will run a prototype Italian FTR chassis with a Honda CBR 1000 engine, which he went on to describe: "The bike is promising, FTR has always made good chassis and of course the Honda engine and will strong. Although Aprilia and BMW are further ahead in development, I will still try to focus and prepare myself to start from where we are to move the project forward. Hopefully we can adapt the chassis to the tires, but for my part I will have to learn everything about the bike, from the electronics to the best suitable riding position. But most important will be the first test, which is expected to be in February.”
Pirro isn’t new to 1000cc bikes, having won the Italian 1000cc Superstock Championship in 2007 and 2008, riding a Yamaha YZF-R1 for the Yamaha Lorenzini by Leoni team. The next season he won the Italian Supersport Championship, and in 2010 rode as a replacement for the injured Vladimir Ivanov of the Gresini Racing Moto2 team, with which he remained for the next season as a regular rider.
The Italian’s career path saw him jump to the highest category in just a few years’ time. “For every rider, the ultimate goal is to race in MotoGP, but I’ll admit that this step in my plans was expected to happen in a couple of years. The important thing now is to work well with the team and have fun at the same time, because when everything goes your way and you can ride without problems, the results gradually come. In a few years I’ve done what many of my colleagues take much longer to achieve, but I believe I've earned each step along the way to the higher categories."
"I don’t want to just 'participate' in the MotoGP class, I’d also like make a statement. Even if the level is high, and I’m racing with the best riders in the world, I want to try to be competitive with them. I realize that in the beginning this won’t be easy, it will be difficult to achieve much because of the different technical circumstances, but hopefully the first year with CRT is an investment for the future, to grow and be competitive in the coming seasons.”

MotoGP Rules and Regulations for 2012
The Grand Prix Commission, composed of Messrs. Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna, Chairman), Ignacio Verneda (FIM Executive Director, Sport), Herve Poncharal (IRTA) and Takanao Tsubouchi (MSMA) in the presence of Javier Alonso (Dorna), Mike Trimby (IRTA) and Paul Butler (Secretary of the meeting), in a meeting held on 14 December in Madrid, decided the following:
Sporting Regulations
A revised wording of the testing regulation was approved. This incorporated the various decisions made earlier in 2011 concerning this matter.
Additionally it was decided that contracted riders in the MotoGP class may also test machines using the allocation of 240 tyres available to each manufacturer's team. Previously such testing was restricted to test riders only. In the interest of fair competition it was also agreed that other MotoGP class riders could exclusively test their team machines with a limit of 120 tyres per rider.
It was agreed that riders who did not qualify for the race based on their time in the qualifying practice can qualify if they achieve a time at least equal to 107% of the fastest rider in the warm up. This is an addition to the previous regulation which only considered free practice sessions.
Under the regulation concerning MotoGP class riders starting the race from pit lane due to an engine durability sanction, it was agreed that in future they will start ten seconds after the green light is shown at the pit lane exit.
Riders in all classes may now use a starter engine on the grid. For all classes tyre warmers may now remain in place until the display of the one minute board. Generators must still be removed at the three minute board.
Technical Regulations
With effect from 2012, for all classes, it will be compulsory to display a red rear light in rain conditions.
The minimum weight limits for 1000cc machines in the MotoGP class will be increased from the current 153 kilos.
- Effective from 2012: 157 kilos
- Effective from 2013: 160 kilos
The permitted wheel sizes for the Moto3 class were confirmed as:
Front 2.50" x 17" only
Rear 3.50" x 17" only
Several detail changes to regulations, submitted by the Technical Director were all approved.
A list of MotoGP class entries for 2012 was considered by the Commission. The list contained nine entries plus one reserve entry using CRT machinery of various types. Participation of all CRT entries was approved by the Commission on the understanding that the granting of CRT Status was subject to review by the Grand Prix Commission at any time.

Roberto Rolfo returns to Moto2
An official agreement between the Technomag-CIP team and Roberto Rolfo was signed on Tuesday, contracting the two to spend the next season together. The Italian teams up with Dominique Aegerter in his return to the Moto2 class after spending a year in World Superbike.
The team will again be fielding a Suter as they have in the past two seasons, which Rolfo helped the chassis builder develop in 2009. The experienced rider also won the Sepang GP and took a podium at Sachsenring aboard the Suter in 2010 when he was riding for the Italtrans Racing Team.
The rider from Turin is pleased to return to the World Championship with this new project:
"In 2010 we disputed the final race in Valencia Moto2 and then…things were left unfinished," said Rolfo, referring to his partnership with the Italian team that was not carried over into the 2011 season. "But you can’t leave things halfway; you fight to carry them out. And so I’m returning to Moto2 in 2012 with Technomag-CIP, a team led by Alain Bronec. I’m very happy because the team operates at a high level and has shown great professionalism over the years, working with very fast riders."
"I'm happy to be back riding a 600. It’s a motorcycle that I love and I really enjoy the high corner speeds with the bike!" continued the 31-year-old, who is currently recovering from a leg injury. "I'm getting better, my knee rehabilitation has been going well and I’m looking forward to getting back on a bike. In early December, the team will meet to plan the winter work program and work on getting set for the first race of a season that is very important to me."

Nicky Hayden Wrist Surgery
The Ducati Team rider had an operation on Monday to insert a screw in the scaphoid in his right wrist, which he fractured in a crash at the Valencia GP.
Ducati Team rider Nicky Hayden underwent surgery on Monday 14th November to speed up the healing process on his right wrist, which was injured in a crash at the November 7th Valencia Grand Prix.
During the operation, which was carried out at the Fremont Sports Therapy and Surgery Centre in Fremont, California, USA, Dr. Arthur Ting placed a small screw in Hayden’s fractured scaphoid. The radial styloid, which is also fractured, was not treated.
“Everything went pretty smoothly,” Hayden said shortly after the operation. “The scaphoid is a slow-healing bone, so you don’t want to wait, only to find out in January that it’s not healing correctly. I’m happy to get it fixed right so that I’ll be ready to go when I need to be.”
After wearing a brace and using a bone stimulator for four weeks, Hayden will have his wrist X-rayed again to assess its status. He is confident of being at full fitness before his return to the track for the first day of the 2012 testing season on January 31st in Sepang, Malaysia.

Motogp Valencia first corner crash
Last race of the Motogp season at Valencia started with a dramatic accident ending the 2011 MotoGP season early.

All rider involved escaped with no injuries which will allow them to start testing the new 1000cc machines on Tuesday.
