Endurance motorcycle racing is set to make a comeback in Australia with a big bang, with a Superbike race announced for next year with the richest prize in Australian motorsport to go to the winner.

The inaugural FX-Superbike 500 will take place at Sydney Motorsport Park on November 16 next year with the bikes set to race from day into night.

The winners of the event will get a cool $100 thousand for their troubles.

Australian Road & Track Rider Promotions, the group that operates the AFX-SBK Championship Sprint Series, are behind the event.

Managing director Terry O'Neill saying the event will give local two-wheel fans their own big race for the first time in decades.

"Australian motorcycle racing has a very proud history of having its own big name icon motorcycle race meetings like the Bathurst Bike Races that were run Easter weekends for many decades," O'Neill said. "Unfortunately race fans have been without their own icon race meeting for a generation.

"We believe this 500 kilometre, $100 thousand winner-takes-all endurance race for FX-Superbikes will once again give Australian race fans and competitors alike something positive and excitign to look forward to on the domestic race calendar, and it will fast become an icon event."

The event will be open to just 50 entries with two riders per bike, and will feature a Le Mans-style start in mid-afternoon with the race set to finish under the glow of headlights.

For locally-based riders to be eligible to enter, they will have to compete in at least three rounds of the Australian FX-Superbike Championship Sprint Series, while the race is open to Aussie currently competing overseas or other international riders.

Technical regulations will be released over coming weeks, with organisers saying their aim is to keep the race as affordable as possible.

One detail has been revealed, with all bikes to compete on homologated DOT-approved treaded road tyres.

Casey Stoner wants the championship lead back

Stoner_crash

Casey Stoner has vowed to make amends for his dramatic last lap crash in Germany as the MotoGP championship heads to Mugello in Italy this weekend.

Reigning champion Stoner handed the title initiative to Jorge Lorenzo when he slid off his Repsol Honda at the penultimate corner on the final lap at Sachsenring as he prepared to launch an attack on team-mate and eventual winner Dani Pedrosa.

The Aussie has dropped to third place in the championship behind Pedrosa and is now 20 points behind leader Lorenzo.

This weekend marks the half-way point of the series and is the third consecutive MotoGP race in a row after Assen and the German Grand Prix.

And Stoner, who set the fastest ever lap at Mugello on his way to pole position last year, is determined to put his title challenge back on the right track at the legendary Italian circuit.

“I've always liked Mugello, we've enjoyed some pretty good results there,” he said.

“Last year didn't go to plan but we know what we did wrong so hopefully this year we can be a little more competitive.

“I really enjoy the fast corners there, there are a lot of areas where we get a lot of wheel spin and a lot of fast changes of direction,” added Stoner.

“It's not a small dinky little track that you can't use these bikes on, it's actually somewhere where you can open the throttle up and actually get to full throttle.

“After a disappointing race in Sachsenring, I want to get back on the bike and take some points back in the championship.”
